Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz 2009

So, here we are again ... Shane and Shiraz. There is a reason though. I keep trying to open a really nice Bordeaux, but time and time again I am foiled by cork. That aside I decided to open another wine on the rack to placate the taste buds. As I had been rejected yet again by the impenetrable arena of Bordeaux I decided to go back to the ole reliable, an Aussie Shiraz.

'Sometimes it takes longer than a lifetime to do a lifetime's work ... it's now up to my children' Jim Barry 1925 - 2004

I thought I had seen it all, but then again Australia manages to surprise me at every turn. This Shiraz is very serious and complex, while being immediately appealing as soon as the bottle is opened. As the wine sits in the decanter it began to reveal more and more layers of complexity.

Colour: Deep Purple

Nose: Cedar, (smoke on the water), blueberry, blackberry, aniseed, fig, vanilla, eucalyptus, mint, leather, black pepper and a hint of coffee.

Palate: Blackberry, blueberry, dates, figs and chocolate. The wine has an exceptionally long finish and fine, youthful tannin.

This is a wine that exceeds on every level, from appealing in primary fruit aromas and tastes, to terroir and a sense of history. This is new world with a long history, as long as a lifetime and continuing beyond. The primary fruit is a telltale sign of new world opulence, while the tertiary aromas are of a sense of place.

Score: A (90)

(Available widely for €19.99)
